We commemorated the national holiday, The Day of the Fight for Freedom and Democracy, with a special project day designed to show students that freedom cannot be taken for granted.
Students actively reflected on the theme of freedom through creative poster production, visually expressing its personal meaning. To understand the era of unfreedom, they watched the film Občanský průkaz (Identity Card), which brought to life the everyday limitations and life of their peers during socialism.
The highlight was the expert lectures. We welcomed Mr. Mikuláš Lakatoš from the Office of the Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Slovak Republic for Roma Communities, who focused on how the Roma community was marginalized from society during the socialist period and the importance of democracy for inclusion. Subsequently, Mr. Peter Jašek from the Institute of National Memory (ÚPN) shared valuable insights into the mechanisms of the totalitarian regime and the destinies of individuals.
The goal was achieved – students left with not only historical knowledge but, most importantly, a deep conviction about the importance of actively defending democratic values..
